I figured after owning and experimenting with a HP DeskJet
for almost a year; and after monitoring the various message-bases I
should contribute my two cents worth. I would like to state that
any positive or negative references are from my personal
experiences and in no why should promote or defame any product.
The products used were not recommended for the uses I have put
them through so they are not responsible for the results I
obtained.
To start out with, the paper I recommend for DJ use is
Weyerhauser First Choice 24# bright white. I tried various copier
paper with mixed if not unsatisfactory results (fuzzy print,
smearing, off-white paper.) Hammermill LaserPrint Plus is a nice
second choice but I like the 1st Choice the best (I've also been
able to find it in 8 1/2 x 14.) For my supplier I go to Paper &
Graphics Supply Center (N.Olmsted, OH (216)777-9990). Second
source is Office Max (N.Olmsted, OH (216)734-5040).
Prices are per 500 sheets as follows -
Paper & Graphics 1st Choice 8 1/2 x 11 $5.35
8 1/2 x 14 $6.95
Laser Print 8 1/2 x 11 $5.55
Laser Plus 8 1/2 x 11 $7.60
Office Max 1st Choice 8 1/2 x 11 $7.30
Laser Print 8 1/2 x 11 $5.56
As you can see 1st Choice is more $$$ but well worth it. By
the way, Paper & Graphics has a huge selection of paper products
(they supply paper to printers.)
To refill your DJ find a drug store, medical supply store,
doctor or vet and get 20cc syringes and 1 1/2" needles if they're
available legally. They let supply the proper amount of ink and
place it deep enough into the cartridge.
As for ink, I have tried to find ones that would duplicate
that which is in the DJ cartridge and I also tried to find colored
ink. I will just list the ones I have tried and the results that
I've obtained. I hope you will find this useful and time saving
(so you don't waste time and a good empty cartidge.) Here goes -
Winsor & Newton Ink Crimson transparent cloggs
made in England water soluable
Dr.Ph Martins 8A Turquise Blue cloggs
Radient conc. water color
water soluable
Staedtler Marsmatic 745R Drawing Ink Black cloggs
made in Germany
SpeedBall Drawing Ink Blue & Red Opaque cloggs &
non-waterproof leaks
Higgins Fountain Black 723 cloggs
Pen Ink non-waterproof
Higgins Sepia Brown #733 cloggs
Calligraphy non-waterproof
Higgins Non-Waterproof Black #4425 partially
Drawing Ink works
Koh-l-noor Rapidograph Black 3081-F works
plotter ink non-waterproof pretty good
The Koh-l-noor Ink works very well but it has been reported
that they changed the formula and it may not work correctly any
more. Also the art supply store hasn't received another shipment since
I bought their last 5 bottles. The bottles hold 22ml(cc) which is
just about right for 2 refills. BTW Koh-l-noor makes other 3081
color inks but I have not found them nor tried them but will if I
do find a source (I am very interested in getting color.)
I have heard that Sheaffer "Script" ink seems to work but
haven't found it yet. I will try it if I can find it. I have just
bought Parker Super Quink Ink (washable Blue & permanent Black). I
will report on these when I have an empty cartidge to try them in.
(Others have reported good results.)
As of mail order refill kits, I have not tried them yet or
have I read many reports on them yet. They seem to be too new to
get any good info on so far.
One other test was to refill a newly depleated DJ cartidge
with water. It seems to work for awhile put gradually print fades
to a gray. It may work for a quick emergency but I wouldn't
recommend for long period use. Something I would like to try is
refilling with rubbing alcohol (90%). I know it sounds weird but we
use alcohol at work to clean plastics with especially pen marks on
plastic covers and removal of white-out. Alcohol could possibly
also be used to thin out ink. This is just a thought and I don't have
any tests yet to result on.
After all this rambling one thing that I have failed to
mention - the amount of ink that I inject into a cartidge to
refill. I generally use between 10-15cc of what ever ink I'm
using. I try to keep around 12cc to be on the safe side of not
over filling.
The last item I'd like to cover is problems with refilling.
If you over fill your cartridge (when it leaks out the jets) leave
it out of your DJ and let it rest on a lint free tissue to soak up
the overflow. I found you can gently wipe the jets with a damp
cloth to remove any build-up. Try plain water or alcohl. If your
cartridge is severally clogged soak it in a small cup with 1/2"
very warm water. If a jet doesn't seem to be firing try cleaning
the contacts on the cartridge (again try alchol & a Q-tip.) Be
sure to keep the cleaning station clean from ink build-up.
I know this is getting long and there is some rambling but I
hope that any one reading this finds this info useful. If you like
to contact me or add your two cents you can contact me by e-mail
